Dayton Coulthard hasn’t ruled anything out on his title chances as he heads into this weekend’s GB4 Championship finale at Brands Hatch.
The Douglas Motorsport driver enters the final round third in the drivers’ standings on 290 points – 83 behind championship leader Alex O’Grady.
With a maximum of 102 points available, the odds of Coulthard beating his KMR Sport rival to the 2026 title are slim, however the Scotsman has not given up hope.
“Everything is possible,” said Coulthard. “It just takes two bad races for the leader, two DNFs or however it plays out. Everything is still to play for and if it is possible, I will keep pushing and get as many points as I can because you never know what may happen.”
Coulthard has demonstrated a high level of consistency across the 2026 season and heads to Brands Hatch on a nine-race streak of top-10 finishes – the best of any driver on the grid.
His total of five podiums this season, of which two have been victories, is already more than double his 2025 tally. He has also improved on his point-scoring record, finishing inside the top-10 in 14 out of 18 races and only missing out on points on the two occasions in which he has retired.
“There have been a lot of positives, and we have shown good pace and race craft on multiple occasions,” said Coulthard. “We’ve shown that we can be at the front, winning or on the podium.
“It hasn’t always gone perfectly, but I’ve learned a lot and enjoyed it. To be going into the last round in the top three, with a mathematical chance to win it, is something positive.”
Comparing his 2026 efforts to his maiden GB4 campaign last year, Coulthard says he has made a lot of steps forward in his self-confidence, which has allowed him to improve his performances on-track.
“Every time I drive, I feel more at one with the car,” he said. “You are always learning and finding out new things as you go on, so I’d say [I’ve improved in] getting that confidence to extract the last little bit in the car and not being afraid of it sliding or moving around.”
Despite his improvements, the 17-year-old is still striving for more, saying that there is “always going to be something” that he can work on with his driving.
“I’m definitely still hoping to improve at a bit of everything,” said Coulthard. “The more you do something, the better you’re going to get at it and the more comfortable you’re going to feel doing it. It’s always going to be a constant learning curve.”
Heading into the final round with a mathematical chance of the title, the Douglas driver isn’t letting the chance of being champion affect his preparations.
“I’m not really worried about anything; it’s just another race weekend,” he said. “The stakes are a bit higher but it’s just like any other race – just get as many points as I can.”
The Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit will host the final race weekend of the year. The 2.433-mile circuit is a drivers’ favourite when it comes to the driving experience and Coulthard knows he needs to perform in Saturday’s qualifying to stand the best chance possible in the races.
“Qualifying at Brands is definitely more important than at other tracks,” he said. “I remember last year that there wasn’t much overtaking, so I just need to qualify as well as I can.”
Coulthard will need a sizeable slice of luck if he is to overturn the 83-point gap to KMR’s O’Grady but remains hopeful of a miracle.
“It is everybody’s dream to win a championship and something that a lot of people don’t get to do,” he said. “It would help a lot with my future in racing to have that under my belt and be able to say that I’m able to win races, run at the front and win championships. It’s very good to have that.”
