Douglas Motorsport's Dayton Coulthard steered clear of plenty of chaos to claim his second win of the GB4 season at Donington Park on Sunday morning.
While Coulthard was serene up front, and claimed a third career GB4 victory, there was endless drama elsewhere, with Luke Hilton rising from eighth to second and Torrin Byrne surging from 17th to complete the podium.
It is a third consecutive podium for Coulthard, who stakes his claim in the championship fight by moving up to fourth and halving his gap to the championship leader since the start of the weekend.
Coulthard made a great start from second on the grid, passing pole sitter Demitri Nolan on the run to Redgate, while further back, Elite's then championship leader Fred Green looked to have made a jump start from 13th on the grid. Green's race was to end just over a minute later though, after being swiped out of contention at Goddards at the end of lap one, bringing out the first of two safety cars.
Coulthard made a strong restart on lap five, but the racing was nullified again with Fortec's Thomas Ingram Hill encountering drama at McLeans having climbed to seventh from 11th, while Arden's Michael Koh, who was battling for the podium positions, ended his race with a puncture at Coppice.
That brought out another safety car, with racing resuming on lap eight. Coulthard led the pack away once more, but Nolan in second was carrying rear wing damage after earlier contact, and had to pit.
That promoted Hilton up to second; the race one winner had started eighth but steered clear of the drama in the early stages to rise to third during the safety car periods.
Meanwhile, Byrne had gained eight places on the first lap alone, and three more on the first restart lap. He was then firmly embroiled in a gripping scrap for the podium spot which included Fox Motorsport rookie Jasser Iskander and Hillspeed's Connor Willis.
Iskander's defensive drive paid dividends initially, but Byrne eventually forced his way through at the Melbourne Hairpin to seal a breakthrough podium in third.
Iskander held on to fourth for another lap, but the defensive driving closed the pack up. Hillspeed's Enzo Hallman had joined the growing group of cars forming up behind the Saudi Arabian driver, but misjudged his braking at the Melbourne Hairpin on the penultimate lap, eliminating Iskander and Pace Performance's John O'Donnell in the process.
Through all that came KMR Sport's Alex O'Grady, who snatched the championship lead by climbing to fourth from 14th on the grid, and finishing ahead of Elite's Matan Achituv, who went from 12th to fifth.
Douglas Motorsport's Conor Grant completed the top-six from 18th on the grid, ahead of Elite's Emmilio Valentino Del Grosso, who gained 15 places during the 20-minute contest.
Romuald Bocquet went from 26th and last on the grid to eighth, ahead of Fortec's Franciszek Cegielski who started and finished ninth. Fox Motorsport's Archie Bullard secured a landmark top-10 from 25th on the grid, his best result in single-seater racing.
The third and final race of the weekend is due to start at 3pm UK time.
