GB4 title contender Ary Bansal has predicted that this weekend's four-race championship decider at Donington Park has all the potential to be full of drama, as the destiny of this year's title is finally decided.
The 15-year-old Indian driver has proven to be one of the stars of this year's GB4 campaign, a frequent figure at the sharp end of the grid, with a standout performance at Snetterton in July resulting in two pole positions and a stunning double win.
In total, the Elite Motorsport driver has three wins, including one in the season opening weekend at Donington, and five other podiums, including two last time out at Brands Hatch. That means he's only 25 points away from championship leader Dan Guinchard, and four away from teammate Isaac Phelps, and with four races this weekend, Bansal can score a maximum tally of 132 points, meaning he's a prime contender for the title.
"Four races at Donington should be very eventful and definitely jam packed" he suggests. "I think I’m looking forward to it because we were quite fast there in the first race of the season, we had very strong pace going into it and I have experience from the last time we were there. It should be fun."
Heading into the event, he's trying to keep the championship picture out of his mind, allowing him to concentrate on each race at a time, while also acknowledging he may need misfortune for the two drivers ahead of him in order to fully capitalise.
“It’s exciting, but it’s a little in the back of my mind also. But as long as I get it out of my mind when I’m driving, then I think we should be ok.
"It’s not just about my results though, because if Guinchard comes P2 in each race then it won’t be enough for me to win the championship. I’m not sure what to do about that, but I can get some solid results there and if Guinchard were to have something like an unfortunate qualifying session, that could really open things up again and propel me into the championship lead and maybe win."
Unlike Guinchard, who is the sole title contender in his Hillspeed team, Bansal's three teammates are also in contention for the title, potentially adding to the drama at Donington.
“It’s weird because we’re all part of the same team and we have to make sure we don’t crash into each other while battling for the championship, which is stressful also!”
