KMR Sport’s Tom Mills heads into the final two races of the weekend on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit with a realistic chance of taking the title a whole event early.
His ninth win of the season in race one means he holds a 109-point advantage over Cooper Webster, and he needs to maintain that advantage at the end of the weekend to guarantee the crown.
But, such is his margin, that it’s now possible for him to provisionally win the crown at the end of race two, should results fall his way.
Factoring in the race three reverse grid system, which provides points for places gained, Webster is due to line up eighth on the grid for the final contest, giving him a maximum possible score in that event of 27 points. That’s in addition to 35 points on offer for each of the other four races remaining this season, including race two tomorrow morning, meaning the Australian can score a maximum of 167 points in the final five races. After race two, Webster will be able to earn a maximum of 132 points across the final four races.
That essentially means that if Mills outscores Webster by 23 points in race two, he takes the title with a race at Brands Hatch remaining, and the full three contests at Donington Park. To gain those 23 points over Webster in race two (which starts at 10.25 on Sunday), the following needs to happen:
If Mills wins, Webster must finish eighth or higher to keep the championship alive.
If Mills is second, Webster must finish the race.
If Mills is third, Webster must finish the race.
Any result outside of those boundaries will take the title fight onto the final race of this weekend at least.
Colin Queen and Liam McNeilly are both still in mathematical contention also ahead of race two, however a Mills podium in race two would eliminate both from any possibility of winning the title.
