Alumni news: GB4 runner-up Waberski claims first GB3 podium at Spa Francorchamps

2022 GB4 runner-up Jarrod Waberski claimed his first GB3 podium last weekend at the legendary Spa-Francorchamps circuit.

The Fortec Motorsport driver lined up in ninth position for the final race of the weekend, but shot up to third on the first lap as he avoided chaos in front of him at the Les Combes chicane complex.

That necessitated a safety car, and upon the restart, Waberski joined the lead duo of Oliver Stewart and championship leader Joseph Loake in breaking away from the pack behind.

While race leader Stewart pulled away, Waberski was able to apply pressure to Loake for much of the contest, ultimately finishing just seven tenths of a second behind the three-time race-winner at the end of the 10 lap contest, despite managing a well-used set of tyres.

“To finish third is a really good result,” he said. “We’ve been struggling with the car all weekend and we had our new tyres on in the last race so the win was kind of out of reach after the first two laps. But overall we’ve made a few good improvements and need to keep our head down to keep getting better.

“On the first lap, I knew we were struggling a bit and that’s when I had to do all my moves. I had a really good first lap and to be honest I think the safety car saved us a bit as it brought me some more time on the tyres. Towards the end of the race we were struggling quite a bit, so the safety car definitely helped us a little bit.”

In his first season in the UK’s leading single-seater category, Waberski sits ninth in the standings, and is the lead driver in the Fortec squad.
