KMR Sport’s championship leader Tom Mills heads to Silverstone looking to extend his 78-point lead over Cooper Webster, and reckons there will be plenty of excitement between the pair during the event.
The duo have gone wheel to wheel at several rounds already, and although Webster took two wins last time out at Snetterton, Mills has taken six so far in 2023, including one at Silverstone earlier in the season.
“Silverstone was a strong track for us back in May both in the wet and the dry, so I am coming into this weekend with confidence that we can keep fighting at the front,” he said.
“Webster was fast at Snetterton and should continue that through to the end of the year now, so it will be a good battle in the coming races.”
The British Grand Prix venue regularly produces some of the best action of the season, with slipstreaming and overtaking aplenty. After their recent battles at Donington and Snetterton, Mills is predicting more fireworks this weekend.
“Our pace is pretty similar at this point in the season, so I can imagine we will have to be racing wheel to wheel for race wins at Silverstone. However, until testing is complete we won’t really know the order, and some others were very quick in our last visit to Silverstone, so it won’t just be the two of us.”
While he’s got a strong points margin over the rest of the field, Mills is taking nothing for granted as the second half of the season gets underway.
“Of course you’ve got to be wary of what others are doing, but I’m mainly focused on ourselves and making sure we do everything we can in our control to maximise every situation.
“We’re all relatively calm as we know how quickly things can change, so we will just be focussed on each round as they come.”
That means he’s still not thinking about a potential title, even though there’s just nine races remaining in the 21-race calendar.
“It’s still far too early to think about the championship. Obviously we are making sure we don’t throw away points for no reason, but a lot can change in the next three rounds.
“I built up a large gap in the first three rounds, so there is no reason why that can’t disappear in the last three, so we are not at the point where we can focus on the championship.
“We just have to keep doing what we have done and keep enjoying ourselves.”
