Evans GP’s Cooper Webster heads to Silverstone aiming to repeat his showings at Snetterton a month ago, as he hopes to further close the gap on championship leader Tom Mills.
The Australian’s first two GB4 wins meant he out-scored Mills for the first time across a race weekend. He attributes the continued upturn in form to the hard work behind the scenes by his Evans GP team, which like Webster, was new to GB4 this year.
“Snetterton was an awesome weekend, almost perfect so I’ll aim for that at Silverstone” he said.
“The possibility of that happening I believe is more likely than not. A lot of the speed has come from changing much of the car setup and I finally feel like we have gotten the race car in the window to keep this momentum in the right direction.
Webster knows he needs to continue outscoring Mills across the remaining rounds to take the championship fight all the way to the wire, with the British driver still holding a 78-point cushion at the top of the standings, having won six races in 2023.
“It will be tough. Even if I drive perfectly it will take some luck to be really in contention for the championship win, but I’ll be trying my heart out the best I can to do so!
“All I can do is focus on myself, keep improving and working hard. With that I believe the results and opportunities will come.”
The Australian heads to Silverstone this weekend looking to make amends for the previous Silverstone event, where he was forced into retirement while battling with a rival in the final race.
“[Without that] the championship simply would be a lot closer, same for the engine issue at round one. However, thinking about what happened at previous rounds isn’t going to magically close the championship gap so I will only focus on the things that will help close the gap.”
While the championship may still be a long reach, Webster is hoping his combination with Evans GP will be recognised as the force his rivals most want to defeat come the end of the year.
“In racing anything can happen, the speed we had at Snetterton may disappear for Silverstone or we may be even faster again. I try not to think too much anything else other than driving or trying to make the car go faster and so far it has worked well for me. Hopefully at the end of the season we are known as exactly that. The ones to beat.”
