South African karting champion Jarrod Waberski will race for Kevin Mills Racing in the 2022 GB4 Championship, which commences this weekend at Snetterton (2/3 April).
The 16-year-old has been competing in the Formula 1600 Championship in his homeland for the past two seasons, and was a podium finisher during his debut event in the category in 2020.
With more experience behind him in 2021, Waberski was runner-up in the same championship last year, and the only driver other than the eventual champion to take a race victory, while also taking eight additional podium finishes. He has continued to race in the series this year, and was a pace setter at the opening round at Killarney Raceway.
Prior to graduating to car racing, Waberski had been a multiple karting champion, taking regional titles in 2013, 2017 and 2018, and the South African title in 2018.
Notably, Jarrod is the son of former British F3 contender Garth Waberski, who raced against drivers including Jan Magnussen, Dario Franchitti, Giancarlo Fisichella and Alexander Wurz in the 1990s.
The Snetterton season opener marks the South African’s first car race outside of his home country, and he’s excited for the challenge ahead.
Waberski said: “I’m really excited to get on the grid this weekend in GB4. It’s going to be an interesting first event as my first experience of the car will be during testing, but thankfully it shouldn’t be too much of a step up from the winged Formula Ford type cars I’ve been driving recently, so hopefully my experience will help me as I get up to speed. Kevin Mills Racing are a very well-known team in the UK with a track record of success in everything they’ve done, so I hope that will put us in a good position!”
Team Principal Kevin Mills said: “It’s great to complete our GB4 line-up for Snetterton with Jarrod. It’s clear from his showings in South Africa that he’s got a lot of potential, and I think he’ll do very well as he adapts to the GB4 F4 car. While this will be his first time at Snetterton, we’ve done a lot of testing at the circuit in recent weeks, so have a lot of good data to share with him as we look to make the most of his obvious talent. As a team we can’t wait to get going this weekend, and we’re very grateful to our partners including SD Sealants and Investchem for all their support.”
