Sherwood “loved every lap” of first GB3 experience

20 September 2022

Race-winner Jack Sherwood had his first taste of GB3 machinery at Donington Park last Friday, as he became the second driver on the GB4 grid to sample the next step up at the circuit in recent days.

Running with the same Elite Motorsport squad he drives for in GB4, the East Midlander enjoyed comprehensive track time in one of the Norfolk team’s Tatuus MSV-022 cars, which left a big impression.

“I loved my first time in the car” Sherwood exclaimed. “There wasn’t a moment in the day that I wasn’t smiling, I loved every lap. It was such an enjoyable car to drive.”

The GB3 car is around seven seconds a lap quicker than Sherwood’s usual contender, and he enjoyed the process of adapting from one car to the other.

“The biggest difference I would say is the aero. It’s massive and takes a lot of understanding to be able to use it effectively. There is a big element of trusting that the car will grip through the high speed stuff. The brakes are also different, it stops much faster.”

The 16-year-old was tasked with some lengthy stints on track by the team, allowing him to get up to speed.

“The main objective for the day was to just get laps in and learn as much as I could, this meant we mainly did long runs.

“We got lots of laps under our belt including a new tyre run which was hugely helpful. I learnt a massive amount and improved every session which is the main thing.”

Sherwood has enjoyed plenty of racing action this year in his first single-seater campaign, with a full campaign in GB4 and selected races in British F4 too. He’s currently enjoying a superb run of form in GB4 which has seen him score more points than any other driver in two of the last three events, and nine podiums from the last 13 races, including two wins.

He’s hoping the strong run could lead to a graduation to GB3 next year.

“GB3 is definitely an option for us. I love the car and it’s a really well run championship, I believe that it is one of the best single-seater championships out there.

“The good finish to the season is definitely helping, I believe as a team and driver package, we’re one of the strongest out there.”
