Oldfield Motorsport savour GB4 win on debut weekend

12 May 2022

The Oldfield Motorsport team entered their first GB4 Championship round at Silverstone, and left the home of the British Grand Prix as race winners courtesy of their Formula Ford star Lucas Romanek.

The call to race at the event came late on, but despite that, the team were able to run competitively straight away, qualifying just 1.3 seconds away from pole despite Romanek only testing the car during the two pre-event days and a single day at Donington in March.

Then, after two very strong finishes that saw Romanek firmly in the pack of cars challenging for victory in race two, the British driver powered from fifth on the grid to win the finale.

“Our debut weekend in GB4, it was a bit of a late start for us and it was a really late decision to make the weekend happen,” commented Team Principal James Oldfield.

“It was Tuesday morning when we got the phone call and were able to make a few things happen. We were so grateful to so many people behind the scenes, a load of team sponsors, family and friends.

“On Tuesday morning it wasn’t happening and then there we were, race winners on Sunday afternoon. It’s mega and I’m really pleased for Lucas on his first go.”

Oldfield hopes that the success will lead to more opportunities for the team to join in this year’s action, and solid plans are being established to compete full time in 2023.

“We certainly want to do a few more rounds, we’ve got some long term plans to try and compete in GB4 next season for the full year, and the win is going to help get our foot on the ladder for next year.

“We certainly want to do another round at least with Lucas this year and get the car out with a few more drivers later in the season. Donington is the next round and our local circuit, we’re only 20 minutes away so if we can get there and with a load of friends and family, it would be really good.”
