Beaming GB4 star Waberski delighted with maiden GB3 test

16 September 2022

GB4 title contender Jarrod Waberski sampled GB3 machinery for the first time in a test day at Donington Park with Hillspeed on Thursday, as explores avenues for next year.

The South African completed in excess of 80 laps at the venue for the championship finale next month, and the driver with perhaps the biggest grin in the GB4 paddock was even happier after stepping out of the Tatuus MSV-021 car for the first time.

“It’s a massive step! Today we came out here to do as much learning as possible, each session we’ve just been building and building with each lap,” he said afterwards. “We’ve been doing really long runs and so far I’m really enjoying it.

“The car is absolutely mega, the downforce and grip levels of the car are really, really insane! The grip, I mean it’s the same tyres but the downforce level and obviously the power difference, the first lap was a big eye opener and put a really big smile on my face. It’s really good.”

Long runs were the focus before a blast on new rubber at the end of the day, and the 16-year-old was pleased with his pace on his first day.

“We’ve been doing really long runs and trying to maximise every lap and to learn as much as we can. We finished on the new tyre run and we were quite quick so we’re really chuffed with that for a first day.”

Having spent the season so far sharing a paddock with the GB3 contenders, Waberski’s been able to get a close look at the UK’s leading single-seater category, and is convinced it’s the right place for him next year.

“GB3 is what we’re looking to do next year, obviously this test gives us a good indication of where we are and obviously the learning and settings to go for, but overall it’s been a really good day and hopefully we can sort something for next year.”

Despite his first taste of GB3 machinery, which continues on Friday, Waberski’s main focus remains the GB4 title decider, also at Donington on 15-16 October, and he’s still very much in with a chance of stealing the honours after two more podium finishes for Kevin Mills Racing last weekend at Brands Hatch.

“Brands was a really good weekend, the pace in the car was really good and the best it’s been so far this year. I’m really looking forward to Donington, I think it will be a really interesting weekend. It’s just going to be a little bit strange hopping back into a GB4 car after driving one of these but it should be a good round!”

Hillspeed Team Principal Richard Ollerenshaw was impressed with Waberski's performance, with the test continuing on Friday.

"We’ve been talking to Jarrod and his father since we first met them at Snetterton back in March. I’ve watched Jarrod throughout the season and he’s a very talented and quick driver," he said.

"I mentioned that I’d like to test Jarrod in the GB3 car early in the season, but it was on the understanding that it would be towards the end of the season which suited us all.

"It’s been a good day today in every aspect. Jarrod has fitted in perfectly with the team and his pace has been excellent. I’m looking forward to tomorrow (Friday) and picking up where we got to today."
