Kevin Mills Racing’s Jarrod Waberski delivered possibly the weekend of his career at Donington Park, taking the final two wins of the season and a third place to pip Max Marzorati to the runner-up spot in the inaugural GB4 Championship standings.
That treble podium landed him 85 points across the three races, the second biggest event haul of any driver this year, allowing him to overtake Marzorati for second place in the final race of the campaign.
In all, the South African took four wins and 10 additional podium finishes, and finished just 50 points behind eventual champion Nikolas Taylor. All that came despite a race against time at the start of the season, receiving a visa to compete in the UK during the week leading up to the first round at Snetterton.
That preceded a mad dash to Norfolk, where he met his team for the first time on the Wednesday of race week for a seat fit, with his first experience of the car coming the next day in testing.
Incredibly, by the end of the pre-event test, he was second fastest only to Taylor, and went on to take a podium and two top five-finishes in the inaugural event.
From there, he proved a constant front-runner, with podiums at every race event and the first win coming at Oulton Park.
“At the beginning of the year I definitely wasn’t thinking I’d be runner-up in the GB4 Championship!” he said.
“The visa only just came through, but it was perfect timing and everything is meant to be.
“This season has been exceptional, I’ve learnt a lot as a driver, different conditions, a different car, it’s been a big jump in general and I’ve developed a lot.”
He’s been accompanied at all rounds by his father and former British F3 racer Garth, with the duo leaving family behind in South Africa for months on end, with only occasional visits home due to his tight schedules.
“For my family, it’s been a big adjustment, flying back and forth or staying many miles away.
“This means a lot to us, and I can’t thank everyone enough for their hard work and commitment for getting me here.”
